EMPI HPMX CARB ADJUSTMENTS FOR VW MOTOR
It IS worth doing for drivability, engine life, and mpg reasons! The carburetor is designed to meter out a mixture of air and fuel in a form that can be burned quickly and completely by the engine.
This is rarely done properly! So, besides metering how much fuel the engine gets, the carburetor is also responsible to atomize the fuel and mix it with the air entering the engine. Carburetors are simply devices that meter fuel depending on the amount of air that is entering the engine.
There are a couple problems though! What this means is that you can have a correct metering for a while, and then at certain RPMs it goes off. Why Jet? If your carburetor is running too rich, the extra fuel will wash the oil off your cylinders and wear out your pistons, cylinders, and rings quickly no oilin addition to building up deposits on your valves, heads, and piston tops.
Get it right! Idle jets operate from idle to rpms or so. It makes it seem very complicated if you start at the middle. What I am going to spend time on now is what YOU can do to optimize what you have! One last check: you MUST have your engine in top mechanical shape no leaky valves, etcno vacuum leaks, and a good ignition system no fouled plugs or you are simply wasting your time messing with the carbs. Be sure to Synchronize your Dual Carburetors too, before doing jetting!
First, we need to figure out if you have the proper sized carburetor to begin with! Bigger is NOT necessarily better. Ideally, you would use a chart to find out if the venturi size is correct. Try to rebuild the EMPI with a good quality kit. Go with the 32 DFT Progressive carb using a 2 into 1 adapter. Go back to stock. I chose 4 for now, and will eventually get the VW plenum. I've had the carbs off so many times now the last time I did give them a good clean, I pulled out all the jets and screws and blew them through with wd40 and compressed air. How do you suggest I clean them, where in particular should I clean?

In my case, the linkage was not well calibrated causing one carb to lead the other. Also, as recommended before, follow the best lean idle steps. Hope this info. Brown, Did you calibrate the floats? Try to turn it on without the linkage then turn it off, too. Does it pop without the linkage? If not, maybe you have to play around with the linkage. Will play around with linkage when I have a chance, see if that helps.
If your mixture screws are non reactive you may have your transition ports too exposed. Your idle speed screws should only just touch the stops and be turned in no more than one full turn.

If your car has a bog or hesitation note where in the rev range it happens. Air-cooled VWs in general like running richer than leaner. These engines experience higher head temperatures than many vehicles and more fuel leads to cooler running.
Many carburetor related stumbles can be traced back to a lean condition in the rev range. However please note that too much fuel can cause engine wear due to thinned oil. If your spark plugs are black and fouled or you see lots of black smoke coming from your exhaust after installing new jets you are probably too rich. Air correction jets work the opposite of fuel jets. The larger the air correction jet the more air it lets into your air-fuel mixture. This will lean out the mixture.
The larger the fuel jet the more fuel it lets in, which will richen the mixture. You can look at your spark plugs to get clues on how your engine is running. Light grey plugs or a plug with a melted electrode typically indicate hot running lean conditions. A dark sooty plug usually indicates a rich condition. A wideband oxygen sensor is a great way to measure your VW bug or sand rail engine's air fuel mixture.
